Everything to Know About Tom Cruise’s New Movie Set in Actual Space
October 2022
CGI won’t be necessary when it comes to Tom Cruise’s newest project. The actor has fought aliens in robot suits, traveled to the depths of the galaxy, and has flown numerous types of planes and jets, all with the help of movie magic. But when it comes to the space walk he’s set to take for his new film with director Doug Liman, the plan is this time for it to be the real deal.
Universal Pictures is backing Cruise and Liman’s new movie, which plans to film at least some scene in actual space. Donna Langley, the chairman of Universal told the BBC that the hope is for Cruise to head up in a rocket to the International Space Station and from there, to be “the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.”
To help with that goal, Liman and Universal have enlisted both SpaceX and NASA. Liman also reportedly has a budget of around $200 million, according to Variety. Cruise, apparently, is said to be getting anywhere from $30 to $60 million for his role as the star and producer of the film.
Cruise and Liman originally pitched the film, which doesn’t yet have a name, to Langley during the pandemic over Zoom. Langley clarified that the majority of the movie will actually take place on earth. Cruise will play “a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth” and he will eventually have to “go up to space to save the day.” As of now, there isn’t much more information on the plot of the movie, or the timeline for its filming.

We Finally Have a Trailer For the Weeknd’s Euphoria-esque HBO Show
November 2022
The Weeknd is getting into series television with a project titled The Idol for HBO, and he has recruited Euphoria creator Sam Levinson to help him. Which tracks. The man, also known as Abel Tesfaye, is famous for creating elaborate mythologies and storylines around his music. So much so that he recently convinced a good chunk of people that he really did get extensive plastic surgery (he did not, it was all just part of a story he was telling around his album After Hours).
He’s also spoken of trying his hand at screenwriting before but has refused to elaborate on any of the details. You can tell from his music videos alone, the man definitely watches a lot of movies.
The Weeknd will co-created the project with Levinson and his own longtime creative producer Reza Fahim. Lily-Rose Depp will co-star in the series with Troye Sivan joining the cast as a series regular.
Here’s everything we know about the series so far.
What Christina Ricci Knows Now
November 2022
For W’s annual The Originals portfolio, we asked creatives—pioneers in the fields of art, design, fashion, comedy, activism, and more—to share their insights on staying true to themselves. See this year’s full class of creatives here.
Your career began in the 1990s, when you were just 8 years old. In the decades since, you’ve played a variety of roles that have an undercurrent of darkness—for example, Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family, Elizabeth Wurtzel in Prozac Nation, Wendy Hood in The Ice Storm, and Misty Quigley in Yellowjackets. What makes you want to say yes to a role when it comes your way?
I always look for something that I haven’t seen before—that feels new and will be challenging because I don’t have an easy reference for it.
There’s been a renewed interest in your career because of Yellowjackets. What were you most excited to do with your character, Misty?
She’s a really, really passive-aggressive character, and I’ve always wanted to play passive-aggression as a very valid form of rage. When I saw this character openly written that way, I was really excited. It’s a legitimate side of being a woman, the way that physiology forces you sometimes, depending on who you are, to not directly and openly express anger. I am five feet two. I have never in my life been openly hostile with a stranger. It’s just not safe. I would imagine that if I weren’t playing this part and I saw this, I would connect to that.
Wednesday Addams, the character you played from the age of 11 to 13, is quite dark too. What do you remember about that experience?
I loved playing Wednesday because nobody ever told me to smile bigger, or to do it again but with more enthusiasm. I never had to pretend in the way that I had to at other times when I was a child. The thing about Wednesday that people love so much is that she is someone who is completely allowed by her family to be 100 percent herself. To play somebody who doesn’t have to please others felt great.
You’re currently working with Tim Burton on an Addams Family spin-off series called Wednesday.
I know it might sound stupid, but I was really touched to be asked to be involved in it. The worlds that Tim creates are so beautiful and grandiose and amazing. It also didn’t really feel like I was revisiting the Addams Family world that I was originally a part of—this is a brand-new version of it. So, in many ways it didn’t feel like something familiar, and that’s great too.
What advice do you wish you could give your younger self?
To lean into what was different about me instead of trying to change so much.
Who are your style icons?
Diana Vreeland, Nicole Kidman, and Tilda Swinton. My dream look is somewhere right in the middle of that triangle. I don’t feel like I can accurately describe my own style, but I can tell you what I’m always going for: I want my clothes to make me seem unapproachable. My clothes should be like an emotional armor that keeps people at a safe distance. I dress for coldness and frigidity.
If you could invite anyone, living or dead, to a dinner party, who would you ask?
Tilda Swinton, Jeremy O. Harris, and David Lynch.
Yellowjackets leans heavily on ’90s nostalgia. Are you nostalgic for that era?
I don’t think so. Thinking about my 20s, I’d like to go back and do it again so I could do it better. I see this a lot when I see young people now. You just have this sense that there’s always something wrong, there’s always drama and always struggling—at least that’s how I was. I’m just happy to not feel like that.
Is there another ’90s icon you’d like to see join the Yellowjackets cast?
They should try to get Natasha Lyonne. Wouldn’t that be amazing? Natasha and Juliette Lewis in scenes together would be really incredible.

Everything to Know About Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dream Project,” Megalopolis
November 2022
Twenty years in the making and finally, Francis Ford Coppola is ready to start production on what has been called his “dream project.” Megalopolis, a Roman epic set in modern times, written by Coppola himself, has been in the works for decades. Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. said he saw early footage of the movie back in 2001, but 9/11 then derailed the project. Eventually, Coppola decided he was going to take matters into his own hands, selling off a stake of his wine empire to self-finance the film, which has a budget of around $100 million. So, it’s safe to say that there’s a lot riding on Megalopolis, and with production starting this fall, more information on the highly-anticipated project will likely continue to emerge. For now, here’s everything you need to know about Coppola’s latest film.
Everything We Know About the A Quiet Place Spin-Off, Day One
October 2022
Lupita Nyong’o is in talks to join the ever-growing A Quiet Place universe. According to Deadline, the actress is in “final negotiations” to star in a spin-off of the horror film, titled A Quiet Place: Day One.
Michael Sarnoski (who recently worked with Nicholas Cage on the critically acclaimed thriller Pig) will direct the film, which was based off an idea by John Krasinski. As of now, the movie has a release date of March 8, 2024. The details of the film remain under wraps, but from the title of the project, it seems like it could be a prequel to the first two films that explains the origin story of the apocalypse and the blind monsters at the forefront of the original story. It does not seem like Krasinski nor Emily Blunt, who both starred in the first film, will be featured in Day One.
Jennifer Lawrence Slows Down the Pace in the First Trailer for Causeway
October 2022
Jennifer Lawrence is returning to her indie roots in her upcoming film, Causeway. The trailer, released on Thursday, reveals a slow burning, bare bones story of a woman struggling, one more akin to her break out, Winter’s Bone, than her more recent titles like American Hustle, Don’t Look Up, and X-Men.
Lawrence spoke about the film in a recent interview with Vogue, saying she was “off-the-bat drawn to the rhythm” of the story. “I like a fast-paced Marvel movie as much as the next person. But I do miss the slow melody of a character-driven story,” she said. Upon reading the script, she immediately jumped into action. “I was like, ‘We have to make this. Let’s make it now.’”
The film is the first movie being made under Lawrence’s production company, Excellent Cadaver. It’s also the film debut of director Lila Neugebauer, who comes from a theater background and received a Tony nomination for her revival of The Waverly Gallery in 2018. Causeway premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last month with heavy praise, specifically for Lawrence’s performance, as talk has already begun about a possible Oscar nomination for the actress.
Causeway tells the story of Lynsey, a military engineer who sustains a debilitating brain injury in Afghanistan and returns home to New Orleans to recover. It’s a story of war and PTSD, yes, but more so about a homecoming as Lynsey reunites with her mother and must reckon with her childhood. Lawrence stars in the lead role alongside Atlanta’s Brian Tyree Henry who plays James, a mechanic who offers Lynsey a ride home and then bonds with her over their past trauma.
